Two new artists are featured in the SCAT Gallery for May.

Today, May 2 at 6 p.m. will be the opening art reception for “Through TheseRealities” which is a photography and poem exhibit curated by award winning photographer Joshua Sarinana.

“Through These Realities” challenges the narratives of mass media that invalidates the experiences of people of color through the interactions of images by six photographers of color: Adam CordelleAndrew HarrisKenia ArbaizaWandy PascoalXudong Liu and Paul Sayed who were inspired by six poets of color: Kesper WangIsabella De Palo Garcia PerezDurane WestAlysia WilliamsMayank Chugh and Cesar Sanchez Beras.

Our other featured exhibit will be “Sanctuary” by Phoebe “Pheebz” Warner who is a Boston-based interdisciplinary and community-based artist focused on the word CULTIVATE. They believe art is meant to feed the communities we live in to stimulate our minds, to tell our stories, to send messages, to celebrate, and to commemorate.

A note from Pheebz:

“This is my thank you.

To the communities in the city who have opened their doors to me.
To the people who recognize my strengths.
To the souls who share their sacred spaces.
Thank you.
Here is a piece of my Sanctuary for you.
Right in the heart of the busy streets
Amongst the smog, the smells, the sounds, the light,
A moment of connection with the Earth
Brought to you by
My legs, My feet,
My hands, My paint.
May you always find Sanctuary wherever you go.”

You wanted more, we’ll give you more.

Makerspace Mondays is a drop-in media maker lab in which youth will be trained on our media equipment through structured workshops at the beginning of the year, which will gradually become more youth-driven. Once youth have displayed competency with our equipment, they will then be able to work on their own individual or collaborative passion projects with staff support.

The program is separated into two sessions. The 3-5 p.m. time block will be for youth in grades 3-6, and the 5-7 p.m. time block is for youth in  grade 7 and up. This is to allow us to accommodate more youth and specialize content based on each age group.

The cost for the program is $115 (7 weeks), and means they can attend as many sessions as they would like. Classes start April 24 and end June 12.

Tuesday April 4, at 6 p.m. the SCAT Gallery will open with a reception for three artists new to its walls.

Located in the lobby of the Somerville Media Center, the SCAT Gallery features three artists for April.

As a child, George Teshu attended St. Peter and Paul’s Russian Orthodox Church, which was filled with icons, gold, candles and paintings of the Holy Family and the Saints. He has studied with many artists in New Jersey where he was born, as well as in Boston and the School of Visual Arts in NYC.

“I feel that these early religious images have had an influence on my art today. My paintings and drawings are both sensuous and spiritual, and focus on the female form.”

George Teshu

Drawing on inspiration from fantasy, pop culture, and science-fiction media, John Ruymann creates digital landscapes. His artwork asks questions about untold stories: where is this represented landscape? Who is this figure? What happens next? His process seeks answers in the suggestions brought forth from the rendered space.

“As an artistic exercise, I will often respond in writing to my drawn work, using a phrase or description from Frank Herbert, Isaac Asimov, or J.R.R. Tolkien to describe composition existing otherwise as fantastic impossibilities.”

John Ruymann

Since August 2022, Henry Hardy has been working with the generative art program Midjourney which uses text input and sophisticated image enhancement techniques to create visionary images. Henry has made more than 20,000 images on Midjourney since beginning his project. These displayed images are Giclee printed on archival quality Hahnemühle William Turner paper, using a high-quality dye printer. His work, “Windows on Other Worlds,” is inspired by his unpublished stories and role-playing world of an alternate Mars in 2034, called, “Lobopods of Mars.”

From a press release from the city of Somerville:

Today, the City is announcing a proposal to fund Educational and Government television services using the City’s general budget going forward, rather than using franchise fees, and to allot all of the annual 5% franchise fees, rather than one-third of them, to Public Access. This will provide more durable financial support for all PEG services and more funding for the Somerville Media Center.

The proposed shift will allot the full 5% franchise fees paid by Comcast and Astound (formerly RCN) to Public Access services, which the City contracts with the independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit Somerville Media Center to provide. It will also increase the Media Center’s share of equipment funding from one-third to one-half of equipment funds received on top of the franchise fee.

Subject to City Council approval of annual budgets for GovTV and EdTV services, the funding shift is projected to provide the Somerville Media Center with more than $1 million in additional funding over the next three years, bringing their total cable-provider funded payments to a projected $2.1 million for the years 2023 to 2025. As the City’s designated public access provider, the Media Center is uniquely eligible to benefit from this funding source due to the provisions within the federal Cable Communications Policy Act. The proposed changes will be memorialized in the Media Center’s 3-yearly grant agreement with the City.

“All three access TV providers offer key services and equitable information access to our community. The community relies on these services. They rely on the alternative access to City and Council meetings, events, information, and emergency alerts provided by GovTV government access. They rely on the sports, event, and learning programming produced by EdTV government access. They rely on the rich community programming, youth programs, and skills training offered by Somerville Media Center as part of public access. This solution will help keep these offerings sustainable amid a changing media landscape,” said Mayor Ballantyne.

“We’re very happy to talk about this long-term funding for the media center,” said Somerville Media Center Executive Director Kat Powers. “We’re turning 40 in March. We’re not there yet, but this is a great first step to making sure we have a secure next four decades.”

The Media Center is also facing an additional burden due to damage to their current location at 90-92 Union Square, a City-owned building where they have operated for decades. After significant water intrusion in 2019, it was determined the building needs significant repair and renovation.

“I’d much prefer that the 90-92 Union Square Building was not in need of major repair. But as we navigate this challenge alongside the Media Center, it is my hope that this additional support will help seed their fundraising for resources to not just survive a move to a new space in Somerville, but to build something even better,” said Mayor Ballantyne. “We have likewise been working to help ensure that the building’s other tenant, the Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers, secures a new Somerville home where they can continue to provide their vital services to our community.”

“We’re really delighted to work with the city to preserve the programs of the Somerville Media Center,” said SMC board president Jesse Buckley. “I want to take a moment to thank the board members, artists and producers of SMC whose vocal support helped us get to this point. We’re very appreciative to the Mayor for these continuing talks.”
